What's in the feed
0–2Low ratings
Every inspection published at 0, 1 or 2 in your areas (in Scotland, "improvement required"), with the rating it replaced and the inspection date. These businesses have been told to improve, and many will look for help before the next visit.
NewNew businesses
Every food business added to the FSA's list and waiting for its first inspection: new restaurants, takeaways, cafés, pubs, caterers, shops and food producers. Many are setting up their food safety from scratch.
Each lead has the business name, type, address and postcode where published, the council area, links to its FSA record and its history here. Your feed page keeps the last two weeks and lets you download any of it.

Questions
- Where do the leads come from?
- The Food Standards Agency's open data, which councils update after inspections and when new food businesses register. We check it every night and keep every change, which is how we can tell you what's new.
- How fresh are they?
- You get each lead the morning after the FSA publishes it. Councils usually publish a rating a few weeks after the inspection, once the business has had time to appeal, so each low rating comes with its inspection date. The FSA updates on working days, so some mornings are quiet, and on those we don't email at all.
- Do leads include phone numbers or emails?
- No. The FSA doesn't publish them. You get the business name, type, address and postcode, the rating and the inspection date. Home-based and mobile businesses often have no published address; they're listed separately.
- Can I contact these businesses?
- Yes, but do it lawfully. Unsolicited marketing emails and texts to sole traders and partnerships need their consent under PECR, sales calls must be checked against the TPS and CTPS, and you must never suggest you're from the council or the FSA. Letters and visits are the usual approach.
- Can I change my areas?
- Yes, from your feed page at any time. Adding or removing areas changes your monthly price, adjusted pro rata.
- What happens after the free trial?
- You'll be charged £15 a month for each area, by card through Stripe. Stripe emails a reminder before the trial ends, and you can cancel from your feed page before then at no cost. Cancelling stops the next payment and the feed carries on until the end of the month you've paid for.
- Is this the FSA?
- No. Hygiene Index is independent and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the FSA or any council. The ratings are theirs, published under the Open Government Licence; the change-tracking and the feed are ours.
